How Planetary Energies Interact

In astrology, an aspect is a significant geometric angle between two planets (or points) in the natal chart, or between planets in two different charts (which is key for synastry). These angles, measured in degrees along the zodiac wheel, describe how the energies represented by the two points interact with each other – whether they blend easily, create tension, offer opportunities, or demand balance.

Astrologers use specific angles while allowing a small range of degrees around the exact angle called an "orb." The allowable orb can vary according to the aspect and the planets involved. For the Astro-Grid's compatibility analysis, we focus primarily on the five major traditional aspects, also known as the Ptolemaic aspects:

☌ Conjunction (0°)

This occurs when two planets are very close together in the zodiac (just a few degrees apart). It represents a powerful fusion, blending, or amplification of the energies involved. The planets act as one unit. This combination is intense and significant, but whether it feels "easy" or "difficult" depends heavily on the specific planets involved. There can be a lack of objectivity.

✶ Sextile (60°)

This is a harmonious aspect formed when planets are about 60° apart, typically linking signs of compatible elements (Fire with Air, Earth with Water). It represents cooperation, opportunity, and easy communication between the planetary energies. Ideas and actions flow well, but the potential offered by the sextile often requires conscious effort to be realized.

□ Square (90°)

This is a challenging aspect formed when planets are about 90° apart, typically linking signs of the same modality but different elements (e.g., Cardinal Aries and Cardinal Cancer). It represents tension, friction, obstacles, and conflict that demands action and adjustment. Squares force growth and push us to overcome internal or external challenges, creating dynamic energy that requires conscious resolution.

△ Trine (120°)

This is the most harmonious aspect, occurring when planets are about 120° apart, typically linking signs of the same element (e.g., Fire to Fire). It represents ease, flow, natural talent, good fortune, and synergy. The planetary energies blend effortlessly and supportively. While beneficial, trines can sometimes be taken for granted or lead to complacency.

☍ Opposition (180°)

This occurs when planets are directly opposite each other in the zodiac, about 180° apart. It represents awareness, confrontation, polarity, and the need for balance or integration. The energies face each other, often leading to projection onto others (especially in relationships) until a conscious balance is achieved between the opposing forces.
